Top night for hospitality Nelson’s top restaurants, bars, baristas, doormen and chefs were recognised at the Nelson Hospitality Awards last night – with The Indian Cafe taking home the award for top restaurant. The awards are held every two years and showcase the best the industry has to offer in the region. They are judged by a mix of experts, industry representatives and from members of the public.

The Indian Cafe was the big winner, taking home the coveted restaurant of the year award, as well as the best ethnic restaurant, while its waitress Denise Gibson won the award for best waiter/ maitre d’. Best bar went to the Speight’s Ale House, which also won the best entertainment category and the top ambience and service award. While one of its bartenders, Riley

Burrows, won the award as the region’s best bar person. Other major awards included the best head chef, which went to Neil Ward from Cafe in the Vineyard at Waimea Estate, and best barista, which was awarded to Noel Young from Sublime.

Other winners were the Pizza Bar for best host responsibility, The Styx for best beverage list, and Nemo Nepe for best door person. Mediterranean Foods won the award for best supplier and Chris Harding from Bidvest was voted as the best sales representative. Around 300 people turned out

for the awards at the Rutherford Hotel last night and organiser Harry Morris says it was a huge success and a great opportunity to celebrate success in the industry. “Especially for the pubic to have a chance to vote for who they think is the best. Being a taxi driver, Peter Combes hears plenty of great yarns. But having just retired after 43 years in the same job, it’s fair to say he’s got plenty of his own to tell too. When he first started at Nelson Taxis the industry was regulated and the Government restricted the number of taxis in each area. There were 27 in Nelson, one in Stoke and three in Richmond. Nowadays there are more than double that. Peter — who lives in a motorhome and is already planning to spend most of his retirement fishing — is a reserved man. But even he chirps up when he recalls the story of his longest fare. “I started at six in the morning. Some seamen got in touch with me at midday

Police are making good progress investigating the theft of a motorcycle from Morley Motorcycle and Marine in Wakatu Estate in June after last week charging a 35 year old Nelson man with burglary. Thieves stole the $6500 motorcycle after gaining entry to Morley’s by removing a shop front window on June 27. Last week, police found the motorcycle at a Christchurch address and charged a Christchurch man with receiving stolen property. Police spokesperson Barbara Dunn says they subsequently charged the Nelson man with theft of the motorcycle. The man was due to appear in the Nelson District Court on Monday - the investigation is continuing and further charges could be laid.

We love Stoke, but... A survey into the future of Stoke has revealed that its residents love living there but they want it to become a more vibrant community, not just “a place to use the supermarket and then get out of there”. Nelson City Council briefed residents of feedback from the recent “Spotlight on Stoke” consultation last Thursday, which focused on submissions for a new community centre. But the results proved there are plenty of other things that could be done to liven up the suburb. With 17,154 people living there, Stoke is Nelson’s second largest suburb in terms of population, and the latest Census shows it’s the fastest growing one as well. But those same statistics show that nearly half of the region’s over 65 year olds live there. Included in the 850 submis-

sions was a need for a larger variety of shops in Stoke, and more cafes and bars that open later too. “I hate it that I have to go elsewhere for shopping and entertainment needs as there is nothing here,” said a resident. Another, who admits they leave Stoke to get a decent cup of coffee, wanted a “vibrant, buzzing” community with plenty of things to do. The residents’ wish list was split into sections, under titles such as youth needs, retail, events, transport and facilities. There was plenty of support for a community centre at Greenmeadows — which council has already allocated funds for — with one submitter demanding a “vibrant community centre

like Victory Community Centre”. One youth said Stoke wasn’t a destination for teenagers; they tended to stay home or go to town to hang out instead. “Stoke needs more recreational facilities for young people that are created and designed by young people.” In general, the feedback suggested Stoke is looking tired. But Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says the council is definitely listening. “The participation and enthusiasm from the people of Stoke in this initial information gathering phase has been fantastic. New Zealand’s champion brewer Martin Townshend has come a long way since he made his first beer. Last Thursday, Martin’s Upper Moutere-based brewery was named New Zealand’s Champion Brewery at the Brewers’ Guild of New Zealand Beer Awards in Wellington. Townshend Brewery won an incredible 12 medals, including five golds, as well as the Champion New Zealand Manufacturer trophy and the New Zealand Specific Style category for his Oldham’s Tap Riwaka Pilsner. Martin’s one-man operation showed that big is not necessarily good as he outclassed some of the giants of New Zealand brewing including DB and Lion. But Martin admits he has learned a lot since his first venture into the world of beer brewing back in 1994. “I was working on an orchard at Mariri with a South African and Swede and we started brewing beer for all the pickers around the area. We brewed 60 litres of home brew every six days and had these great parties - the beer was terrible but it was cheap.” These days Martin’s operation is far more sophisticated, with

Although Townshend Brewery’s already excellent reputation has been enhanced by last week’s big win, Martin says being a commercial brewer is not all beer and skittles. He’s worked hard to expand his brewery from the small six by three metre shed he built at the back of his house in 2004, estimating that he bottled close to 250,000 beers by hand before allowing himself the luxury of buying a $135,000 bottling plant. “It’s been really hard work because the standard of beer in New Zealand is so

high. We’ve managed to grow and had some good success, but all that has meant is that we can go on a holiday once a year now instead of once every three years - it’s really a labour of love for me.” Townshend Brewery’s won gold medals for its Flemish Stout, Black Strap Porter, Kings Landing Scotch Ale, Oldham’s Tap Riwaka Pilsner (with Liberty Brewery) and Tiebreak Summer Ale (with 666 Brewing). Nelson’s McCashin’s Brewery also won gold for its Stoke Recognition Rich Porter, while Sprig & Fern won gold for its Harvest Pilsner.

As part of its national Battle for our Birds programme, the Department of Conservation (DOC) is undertaking aerial pest control to protect native species from beech mast predator plagues that could decimate their numbers. The pest control will also target possums.

A collection of “amazing marine creatures” will be one of the big attractions at a new fishing museum and marine education centre to be established in the Plant and Food building on Rocks Road in Nelson. The marine museum is one of five projects on Nelson MP Nick Smith’s to-do-list which he announced at his election campaign launch at the Boathouse last Thursday. The private collection of “hundreds of specimens of seabirds, fish, marine mammals” had been purchased by Peter Talley, who last week donated it to the newly formed trust that will manage the marine museum project. “This new centre is about asserting and celebrating our status as New Zealand’s fishing capital and the largest fishing port in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s the right idea, right time and right place,” Nick says. The centre will also have live fish in aquariums and “a place where children get their hands wet and learn about the marine environment”. It will feature displays of the history of Nel-

Approximately 270,000 ha Kahurangi National Park and other Conservation managed land between the Owen Valley in the south to Parapara Peak/Kahurangi Point in the north. The operation extends from western boundary at the coastline north from Kohaihai to the Wangapeka River boundary /Mt Arthur Range in the east. Major areas include (but not limited to): Heaphy Track; Wangapeka Track; Mt Owen; Cobb Valley and part of the Mt Arthur Tablelands.

Method of control

Cereal baits containing the pesticide 1080 will be distributed by helicopter over the above area. The 1080 baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 2-3 cm long, cinnamon-lured and dyed green. The 1080 operation will be preceded by an application of non-toxic prefeed baits. The non-toxic prefeed baits are 2 cm long and not dyed.

Always remember when in the area:

• DO NOT touch bait or bait bags • WATCH CHILDREN at all times • DO NOT eat animals from this area • DO NOT allow DOGS access to animal carcasses Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at the public access ways in the above area. All public walking tracks within the area will be closed during and immediately following the 1080 operation until a track inspection is completed. Warning signs will be placed at all normal points of entry to the area and at huts within the area immediately prior to the 1080 operation.

Commencement Date

The operation will commence with a single application of non-toxic prefeed baits on or after 1 September 2014. The application of 1080 bait will follow at least five days later. The area is divided in five operational blocks which may be treated at different times. The actual date of all parts of the operation will depend on the availability of periods of suitable weather. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. son’s fishing industry “from early Maori to our modern fleet”. “The timing is right because Plant and Food are intending to vacate the heritage powerhouse building in 2016, as they relocate to their new Port Nelson facilities,” Nick says. “The water intakes, filters, fish tanks and labs are ideal for a marine education centre.” The marine animal collection will be one of the features of the museum and Nick is delighted that Peter has generously gifted it to the trust. The animals, which were preserved by a Whangarei taxidermist and owned by a private collector, were purchased by Peter about 15 years ago, Nick says.

ACC pays $23m to Nelson Labourers, carpenters and joiners have had the most work-related accidents in the past 12 months, according to an ACC injury comparison report which says it paid out more than $23 million to Nelson residents during the year. The annual report, which accounts for the 2012/13 financial year, was released last week and includes statistics on the total number of claims, how much was paid out, and which occupations and sports caused the most inju-

ries across 72 different territorial authorities in New Zealand. From the 72, Nelson City is ranked 28th in terms of the most injury-prone, with Tasman in 48th position. If it was separated by region, Nelson City would the most injuryprone and Tasman the least, but unlike most other regions in New Zealand, they are not comprised of a number of smaller territorial authorities which can average out the injury rate.

ACC paid out $23,674,005 to Nelson residents, with 19,062 claims made. The claims rate per 10,000 of the population was 4073. In to-

tal, 104,045 days of productivity were lost. Those statistics are up very slightly from 2011/12 when 19,030 claims totalled a pay-out of $22,859,252. In Tasman, where fruit growers, carpenters, joiners and livestock producers made the most work-related claims, a total of $26,021,239 was paid out in 2012/13. The number of claims was 18,044 and the claims rate per 10,000 of the population was just 3712. Those statistics were up

from the 17,646 claims made the year prior, when $25,743,521 was paid out. When comparing the type of injuries reported in both Nelson and Tasman, ACC says one of the major factors is the population demographic. Nelson, with an older population, exceeds the national average injury rate in two areas; falls and water sport related injuries, while Tasman exceeds the national average in work and water sport related injuries.

Dress in blue for charity walk MS Ford is encouraging people to take part in a good cause this Father’s Day - and it’s compulsory to have fun doing it. A Father’s Day 5km walk/ run will be held in town on September 7, starting and finishing at MS Ford on Haven Rd. Participants will follow a course between Trafalgar Park and Miyazu Gardens, and it is open to all ages and abilities. Final days for charity drive applications The latest entry in the Car Company Charity Drive, Nelson’s Youth and Community Trust, is gaining a high profile from some of the concerts it is staging for the region’s youth, but there’s much more to the charity than fun and games. The trust was formed in 2002 with the aim of adding value to young people’s lives and helping them achieve their goals. It has helped organise popular alcohol and drugfree musical events, and also promotes recreational services for young people by way of The Truck. The trust’s Nelson Underage hit the headlines when they joined forces with Smokefreerockquest to stage the Broods concert at the Theatre Royal in June. The concert was a sell-out and Nelson Underage organiser Nathan Telford is hoping their next event featuring international DJs performing at the Tahunanui Skating Rink

The Truck is also proving to be a big hit taking its mobile recreation facilities, which includes a skatepark, basketball hoops and touch and football equipment, to schools and sports grounds around Nelson. “We get 100 to 120 teenagers a week at the Truck. We cover the Victory community, the YMCA, Nelson Intermediate, Broadgreen, Stoke Youth and go to Saxton Stadium,” Nathan says. “It’s going very, very well.” But trust manager David Atoa says there’s a serious side to their services because they also provide accommodation and care for at-risk youth. “These teenagers might have come from a situation where the family has broken down and need a place to stay for two or three days,” David says. “It Locally Owned and Operated

happens in Nelson more than you think.” David says they also help young people cope with the big step from school into the workforce through their Youth Transition services. Staff help youth with writing CVs and job placement and provide mentoring to help them through what can be a challenging stage of their lives. David says the trust is funded by the Nelson City Council as well as from community grants from groups including the Canterbury Community Trust. “We have a very dedicated staff and volunteers and get some funding but it is limited. We could do so much more and provide a much better service for the region’s youth if we had more funding.” The Car Company Charity Drive competition offers $10,000 to a non-profit group or organisation in the NelsonTasman region. It has attracted 58 entries with the winner to be named on The Breeze radio show on September 5.

Kaye McNabb, the chief executive of Nelson Airport Ltd, has been selected as a finalist in the national Women of Influence Awards. Now in its second year, the Women of Influence Awards are about identifying the bold, energetic women who are helping shape New Zealand and its future across eight categories. The judges are looking for women who are having an impact well beyond their formal roles and titles at local, regional and national levels. “It was quite humbling as well as a real honour to have been asked by Jane McSpirit, Bank Manager at Westpac Nelson, to accept a nomination for the these awards” says Kaye , “and it was an even bigger surprise and very exciting to be notified that I was a finalist”. Kaye McNabb. Kaye has been nominated for the category “Local and Regional” which recognises women who are having an impact at a local or regional level. Kaye sits on the executive committee of the New Zealand Airports Association and a number of working groups for the Civil Aviation Authority and Ministry of Transport. She also chairs the Top of the South Aviation Cluster and Strategy Committee, both of which work to grow and promote the aviation industry in the region. Kaye also serves on a number of consulting and working groups in respect of CAA and Ministry of Transport legislation reviews, is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management, a member of the Institute of Directors and a Justice of the Peace. The winners of each category and then the overall winner will be announced at a Gala Dinner event in Auckland on the October 8.

Bob Howard was already three days out of Nelson when message got through to his father that he’d joined a merchant ship headed for London. It was 1947, he was just 16 years old, and his father didn’t like that very much. But there was nothing he could do, with Bob at sea for the next 77

days aboard the Pamir. Short of workers: I'm a nurse who works at a resthome in Nelson and we recently lost one of our best Health Care Aids who has been with us for eight years. Last night we needed staff and the area-wide agency service had none available. It is very hard to get staff (all resthomes face this problem) and yet our best worker is now facing deportation because the Government will not renew her work visa. A section of countryside is selected for the new road and the town is freed from its traffic burden. Here in Nelson the opposite is being demanded by a small minded group who are ignoring the detrimental environmental and health effect the Southern Link will have on hundreds of families living in the Victory and Bishopdale areas and Nelson as a whole. Rocks Rd performs a very effective job as a bypass for the town centre. It makes absolutely no sense to put traffic back through built up areas. A new road is not needed. It will not solve any of the claimed traffic issues in Nelson. All traffic will still be going through the Annesbrook roundabout. We need to look at longer term, sustainable traffic management. GETTING STUCK IN: Martin Rutledge and Jayarn Sheridan getting stuck in at the Cawthron Institute's planting day last Sunday. Around 50 enthusiastic volunteers gathered at Glenduan to put 700 native trees in the ground. The planting is part of a long term beautification project for Cawthron’s aquaculture park, as well as supporting habitat restoration in the area beside the Boulder Bank. Since last year’s planting, staff at the aquaculture park have already seen a return of many native bird species and hope that the efforts of everyone last Sunday will encourage more of the same ecological benefits. Transforming Saxton Stadium into a lavish dining room and catering for almost 600 guests attending a prestigious national awards function might seem like a big ask but Petite Fleur not only helped achieve it - they did it in style. The Fulton Hogan Excellence Awards were held at Saxton Stadium on July 21 in conjunction with the Local Government of New Zealand annual conference held in Nelson. Saxton Stadium was selected as the venue for the awards function and Horst Wellmeyer and Justine Robertson of Petite Fleur were contracted to cater for 585 guests in the form of a three course set menu and wine match. It was easily the biggest assignment Petite Fleur has undertaken since starting their restaurant and catering business based at Seifried Estate in 2008. Petite Fleur had catered for up to 350 guests at Seifried Estate and Horst had previously catered for up to 2000 people working as a chef in the Middle East and Asia, but he says the Fulton Hogan Awards presented a unique set of challenges. "We are used to having enough staff at our disposal for functions but for a big, one-off event like the one at Saxton Stadium we had to recruit a lot of help," Horst says. "Catering for an off-site event also meant we

had to prepare the food here at the restaurant and transport it to the venue - it was a major logistical undertaking." Justine says they resolved the staffing issue by training 60 students from Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls as their wait staff for the function. The students received a reference from Petite Fleur as well as a discounted ticket for their school ball which was held at Petite Fleur at Seifried Estate. Petite Fleur also had a dedicated band of about 58 friends and family helping their regular staff to look after the drinks and food. "We had 110 people and most of them were inexperienced so we had briefings and a dress rehearsal the night before," Justine says. Horst says all the food was prepared at Petite Fleur's restaurant before transporting it to Saxton Stadium on the night. "It was a big day. We started at eight in the morning and didn't finish until two or three in the morning," he says. Saxton Pavilion was decorated by Christchurch company Event Impressions and Horst and Justine say the Cinderella-like transformation was amazing. "It was a really good team effort by everyone and it just goes to show that the region can pull together such a fantastic event."

Students get down to business They may still be at school but that didn’t stop the region's Young Enterprise Scheme businesses selling and promoting their products with the ease and confidence of professionals. There were 23 businesses flaunting their wares at last Saturday's Nelson market, as part of the overall scheme, which runs throughout the year. Students came up with a business idea in term one, which was then presented to the "Dragon's Den".

Now in the third term of their of the scheme, the focus is solely on selling their products to the public. There was a huge selection of products at the market from clothing, jewellery, skin care and furniture, and the students excelled when it came to interacting with the public. The winner was Nelson College’s Vivacity and their daffodil rings that had links to the Cancer Society. Their prize was a free market stall for four weeks and $100.

Pines chase third national title The Richmond Mall Pines headed to Tauranga on Monday, chasing their third national title in as many years. The Nelson Pines have won the Volleyball New Zealand Club Championship twice in the past two years, and while the bulk of the squad remains intact for this week’s competition, coach Colin Redpath isn’t expecting an easy ride. “Our aim is to win it, but the top three or four teams are definitely stronger this year, so we’ll have to be another step up,” he says. Colin says there are about five different teams capable of winning the title this year, including perennial favourites Sparta, who compete out of Auckland, last year’s finalists Harbour Raiders, a team which his son Jack now plays for, hometown team Mauao Reds, and South Island rivals Shirley Silverbacks out of Christchurch. The Nelson Pines squad is built around New Zealand captain

Patrick Shone, who was last year’s MVP, and Ben Glue, who was named best spiker at the tournament last year. Just four of the squad live in Nelson — Patrick, Harry Fergusson, Josh Ovsenek and Teryn Proracki — but most of the others are former Nelson players now living in other parts of the country, while two of the squad have been brought in from Australia. Colin says the team’s strength is their blocking ability and their championship record should give them plenty of confidence too. “We’ve got the best setter in the country and the best opposite in the country and we base the team around those two. But we’ve learnt how to win and that’s got to be a strength.” With much of the squad based outside of Nelson, The Pines have held training sessions in Wellington and tried to organise as much competition as possible around the country. Both teams got the better of Tasman, with the women getting the ball rolling with a 3-2 win at Saxton Field, before rising star Jesse Forsyth scored just seconds before fulltime to secure a 2-1 win in the men’s final.
